ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
Statement of purpose
A key element of NOTWOOD is the replacement of profiles currently made with wood, particularly hardwood and PVCu, with a wood substitute profile made from recycled polystyrene, thus reducing the environmental impact of using hardwood.
Product composition
An extruded profile made from:
1) Recycled Polystyrene (84%)
2) EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) (10%)
3) Added masterbatch pigments (5.5%)
4) UV Stabilisers (0.5%)
1) Recycled Polystyrene Sources
The sources of the recycled PS are principally from packaging materials and some reprocessing products.
2) EPS is the main blowing agent to “foam” the product and consists of Pentane gas dissolved in PS beads
Chemical Blowing Agents.
Totally encapsulated in the polymer. These chemicals react during processing to release either CO2 or N2, which aid in the foaming/surface finish of the product. They are not classed as harmful under COSHH.
3) Pigments
Totally encapsulated in the polymer. Pigments are masterbatched into PS prior to use. The main brown pigments are made from Iron Oxides. Carbon black and some organic, non-cadmium, heavy duty metal-based pigments are also used. White pigment is based on Titanium Dioxide.
4) UV Stabilisers
The chemicals, which help to protect the profile surface degradation due to the effect of sunlight, are used in very small quantities and are totally encapsulated in the polymer and are not released into the external environment.
Product Recycling
NOTWOOD is fully recyclable, and can be reground, palletised and re-processed back into NOTWOOD material, or used in other recycled polystyrene products.
Ecological Information
NOTWOOD is insoluble in water.
Tests carried out in accordance with 85/572/EEC certification, show that the total amount of material, leaches out of this product, is within the limits for certification under the Plastics in Contact with Food Regulations.
